Job Details

Physical Therapist (PT)

Primary Purpose: To provide physical therapy (PT) services to students (pre-K through grade 12) identified as eligible under special education plans (e.g. IEP or 504). You help them improve mobility, functional independence, and ability to participate in school activities, enabling access to the school environment and curriculum.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution or beyond
  • Valid Florida Physical Therapy licensure or eligibility for licensure.
  • Experience in pediatric or school-based therapy settings is preferred.
  • Experience working with pediatric and school-aged populations, ideally within a school or special education environment.
  • Familiarity with IEP processes, educational laws, and documentation requirements for school settings.
  • Able to travel between schools, work in different environments (classrooms, therapy rooms), and adapt therapy plans to changing student needs.

Skills

  • Knowledge of pediatric physical therapy, child development, gross motor functions, adaptive equipment, and school-based therapy principles.
  • Familiarity with educational laws/regulations relevant to special education needs (e.g. IEP, 504 Plans, IDEA), and school-based service delivery frameworks.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills — ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team (teachers, parents, staff, therapists) and engage in IEP/team meetings.
  • Organizational skills: be able to manage documentation, scheduling, caseloads across multiple sites, and maintain accurate records.
  • Flexibility and adaptability: able to travel between schools, work in different environments (classrooms, therapy rooms), and adapt therapy plans to changing student needs.
  • Physical stamina: role may require lifting, positioning of children or equipment, and working in varying indoor environments.
  • Experience working with pediatric and school-aged populations, ideally within a school or special education environment.
  • Experience with adaptive equipment, assistive technology, mobility aids, and environmental modifications to facilitate access and participation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual student physical therapy evaluations and re-evaluations to assess functional motor abilities relevant to school tasks (mobility, positioning, balance, transfers, gross motor skills).
  • ???????Develop individualized intervention plans/treatment plans — aligned with each student’s educational goals (IEP or 504 plans).
  • Provide direct physical therapy services, individually or in small groups, in school settings (classroom, therapy area, or other least-restrictive environment).
  • Monitor patient progress: track changes, document outcomes, and update plans or recommendations as needed.
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, school staff, parents, and other related-service providers to integrate therapy strategies into daily school routines and classroom environments.
  • Participate in IEP / 504 / multidisciplinary team meetings to contribute to individual education planning, goal setting, accommodation decisions, and review progress.
  • Train and instruct teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, or aides in delegated therapy-related techniques, positioning, use of adaptive equipment, safe transfers, and mobility support. 
  • Delegate tasks appropriately to assistants (if supervising), paraprofessionals or other school staff when needed. 
  • Travel throughout the school district to serve students at different school sites as assigned. 
  • Maintain required documentation and records (treatment records, time sheets, Medicaid or billing statistics if applicable), following district and state policy.
  • Lift, transfer and position children or equipment when required, as part of therapy and mobility support
  • Support school staff development: provide training or professional development when needed on therapy-related topics or best practices. 
  • Perform additional tasks or “other duties as assigned” that are consistent with the goals and objectives of the physical therapy program and student needs.
