Key Responsibilities

  • Provide hospice nursing care to patients with a prognosis of six months or less to live, primarily serving geriatric populations.
  • Administer medications, including pain management using the WHO Analgesic Ladder and other pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain interventions.
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including symptom management for conditions such as altered mental status, nausea, pressure ulcers, and other end-of-life issues.
  • Educate patients and families on disease processes, care plans, and support during end-of-life stages.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and implement individualized care plans aligned with Medicare and state regulations.
  • Document patient care via Electronic Medical Records (preferably EPIC) and ensure compliance with all clinical protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina or a Compact state, or pending license approval at the time of start.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, with recent hospice or palliative care background preferred.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Experience in medication administration, pain management, symptom assessment, and end-of-life care.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Experience / Skills

  • End of Life Care skills including death pronouncement, counseling, and spiritual needs assessment.
  • Knowledge of ethical and legal issues such as advanced directives and organ donation.
  • Experience with IV management, including starting and maintaining peripheral IVs or central lines.
  • Familiarity with DME authorization and handling complex symptom management situations such as ascites.

Additional Details

  • No RTO (Requested Time Off) during the first week of assignment.
  • Orientation includes 40 hours of hospital training plus additional hospice-specific training.
  • Shift requirements include on-call rotation and potentially floating within nearby units.
  • Must be comfortable working with terminally ill patients and navigating sensitive situations.
  • Travel compliance and testing must be completed within 48 hours of signing.
  • Candidate interview via Zoom is preferred before offer.
  • Local candidates within 50 miles will be considered for lower-rate positions.
  • Eligible candidates must be able to work five days per week, including two out of three major holidays.
