Key Responsibilities

• Accurately identify patients using two patient identifiers and proficiently perform phlebotomy to obtain blood specimens; label all specimens with required patient and collection information
• Collect a variety of specimen types including throat swabs, MRSA swabs, urine samples, heel sticks, finger sticks, blood cultures, blood bank specimens, and arterial punctures
• Perform patient registration, demographic and insurance data entry, and transfer test requests into Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• Receive and accession collected specimens, examine for testing acceptability, centrifuge and aliquot as needed, and deliver or batch specimens for courier pick-up
• Perform specialized collections including breath alcohol testing, random urine drug screens, pre-employment and legal urine drug screens, glucose tolerance, and hormone stimulation collections
• Perform limited waived testing, quality control procedures, result entry in LIS, temperature checks, and assist with inventory and supply management

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of phlebotomy experience required
• Proficiency with Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture, arterial punctures, and a wide range of specimen collection procedures
• Knowledge of proper specimen handling, aseptic technique, and order of draw requirements
• Ability to assess patient response to procedures and communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Experience performing electrocardiogram (EKG) tracings, including 10-lead and pediatric EKGs
• Familiarity with insurance processes specific to reference laboratories and government billing regulations
• Experience transporting specimens to client sites, patient homes, or external facilities
