Special Education Teacher

Primary Purpose: Teachers are responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, rigorous instruction in their content areas that produce unmatched results and student understanding. Teachers are also responsible for promoting a college-preparatory culture that assists our students on their journey to and through college. Teachers will perform additional duties, as necessary, to ensure that all students will learn and contribute to the school’s overall community. Whatever it takes. No excuses.

Position Details:

• Location: Memphis, TN
• Pay: Starting at $44/hr
• Hours: M-F - May vary based on location
• Position(s): Middle School Functional Skills Special Education Teacher, Middle School Instructional Resource Special Education Teacher

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
• Valid TN teaching certificate in for K-12 or 6-8 or 6-12 for appropriate special education endorsement.
• Minimum 1y exp teaching MS level students, 2yrs or more preferred
• Experience working with students with a range of disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism, developmental delays, etc.)
• Commitment to working with educationally underserved students
• Commitment to the design and development of the school
• Experience teaching in an urban school and/or charter network

• Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty area
• Knowledge and skills in working with children with behavior and emotional disabilities

Responsibilities:

• Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP)
• Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques
• Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals
• Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals
• Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies
• Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP
• Plan a program of study and unit/weekly/daily lessons that, aligned with the school’s curriculum and that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
• Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is developmentally appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
• Implement, by instruction and action, the region’s philosophy of education, the curriculum, and instructional goals and objectives
• Take necessary and reasonable precautions to assure safety in the classroom and the school for all students
• Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
• Assist the administrative team in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct
• Make provisions for being available to the students and to the parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
• Maintain professional relationships with colleagues
• Actively engage in all professional development opportunities
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned
