Special Education Teacher

Primary Purpose: Creating a safe and enjoyable educational environment that encompasses our social justice model and that ensures every graduate moves on to attend college. Providing individualized instruction and enrichment opportunities for students to ensure that gifted students are challenged and struggling students are supported.

Position Details:

  • Location: Bridgeport, CT
  • Pay: Starting at $45/hr
  • Hours: May vary based on grade level
  • Class size is 10-15 students and the SPED Teacher.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid CT teaching certification In Special Education.
  • Experience working with students with a range of disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism, developmental delays, etc.)

Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience in lesson planning with clear objectives and assessment methods.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Common Core State Standards and educational technology.
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, techniques, and best practices. Excellent communication and interpersonal
  • skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple tasks, IEPs, and progress monitoring.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping students with special needs succeed.
  • Previous experience working with students with special needs in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Ability to lift and move classroom materials and equipment as needed.
  • Ability to assist students with mobility or physical needs as required by their IEPs.

Responsibilities:

  • Small cohort classroom setting with approximately 10-15 students.
  • Attend all professional development trainings, data team meetings, and curriculum meetings;
  • Collaborate with peers and school leaders to improve instructional strategies, school climate, and leadership skills;
  • Participate in professional training to enhance knowledge as well as educational and leadership capabilities.
  • Build a bridge of communication and involvement with parents, families, and community leaders.
  • Track and maintain IEP records for all special education scholars;
  • Work as a part of the Student Assistance Team (SAT) to identify and support students with disabilities.
  • Create a safe, effective, student-centered learning environment that fosters student curiosity.
  • Motivate students to put forth their best efforts in academics, athletics, activities, and personal conduct.
  • Support students to recognize their full potential in all areas of human development.
  • Build a bridge of communication and involvement with parents, families, and community leaders.
  • Analyze data and use it to inform and drive instruction.

Work Environment:

  • Classroom and school environment, which may include both individual and group instruction.
  • May involve working with students in various settings (classroom, therapy rooms, or outdoor spaces).
  • Frequent interaction with parents, staff, and administrators.
