Histology Technician I

Schedule / Job Type

Contract | Full-Time | Onsite | Day Shift | Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts with approximately one Saturday morning per month

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare fixed and frozen section specimens, including cutting and embedding tissue, for microscopic examination by a Pathologist according to established laboratory protocols

• Receive, identify, log, and release tissue specimens in accordance with established coding schemes and laboratory procedures, recording relevant specimen information

• Prepare and maintain laboratory solutions and reagents according to established procedures and precise formulae

• Catalogue and file slides, maintain quality assurance records, and prepare referred specimens for outside consultation as required

• Perform routine equipment maintenance and document maintenance activities as part of the section's quality assurance program

• Assist with gross examinations and autopsy specimens as required, and provide instruction to students or new employees in proper histology techniques as needed

Required Qualifications

• Associate's degree in a science-related field required

• Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnology program required within one year of employment

• Certification by the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required within one year of employment

• Knowledge of histochemical reagents, solutions, and equipment maintenance gained through on-the-job experience

• Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with physicians, technologists, and other personnel

• Analytical skills to assess specimen preparation methods and evaluate stain suitability

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Bachelor's degree in a science-related field preferred

• Prior experience with special stains and familiarity with histology laboratory equipment

• Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to recognize and remedy technical difficulties encountered during tissue processing
