Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Sign Language Interpreter

Key Responsibilities

• Provide sign language interpretation across all academic settings and extracurricular activities
• Support language development and self-advocacy skills for students with hearing loss
• Facilitate communication between students and their peers, teachers, and school staff
• Collaborate with the educational team to ensure students have full access to the curriculum and classroom activities
• Assist students with mobility or physical needs as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Use and maintain assistive technology devices, hearing aids, and other communication equipment as needed

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Deaf Education or a related field
• Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Educational Sign Language Interpreter Approval
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other sign languages as required
• Strong understanding of Deaf culture and communication methods

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Knowledge of educational strategies for students with hearing impairments
• Familiarity with assistive technology and communication devices commonly used in DHH education
• Experience collaborating with special education staff, general education teachers, and families to support student success
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with experience managing multiple students, IEPs, and assessments
