Key Responsibilities
- Assess and respond to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients through observation and interaction, serving as a patient advocate throughout the care continuum.
- Utilize professional nursing skills and clinical judgment to implement individualized nursing care, transcribe and carry out physician orders accurately and in a timely manner, and maintain thorough electronic documentation in the patient clinical record.
- Communicate patient assessments to appropriate team members to ensure coordinated care; complete final review of patient records to verify all required paperwork, site marking, and pre-operative activities are complete prior to procedure.
- Provide PACU-level care when assigned, including airway management, vital sign monitoring, pain management, and evaluation of patients against discharge criteria to safely progress to Phase 2.
- Work across assigned areas including pain management and eye laser procedure rooms; assist with nerve blocks and demonstrate familiarity with anesthesia supplies and emergency equipment locations.
- Provide patient and family education, assist with housekeeping duties as needed, and participate in committee meetings while contributing suggestions for process improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
- Experience in perioperative nursing within an outpatient surgical setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of diagnostic measures including laboratory values, radiology, and EKG interpretation.
- Proficiency in IV therapy and electronic clinical documentation.
- Knowledge of surgical center admission processes, correct surgical site verification procedures, and transfer protocols.
- Ability to function effectively as a float nurse, maintaining communication across all areas and supporting staff workflow.
Preferred Experience / Skills
- Prior PACU experience with demonstrated critical thinking in post-anesthesia patient assessment and care.
- Familiarity with anesthesia supplies, nerve block assistance, and emergency cart locations including crash cart and malignant hyperthermia cart.
- Experience working across multiple procedure areas within an outpatient surgical environment.
