Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

Full-Time | Permanent | Days | Shift work including nights and weekend call required for 24-hour laboratory coverage

Key Responsibilities

• Perform all levels of laboratory testing independently, including CLIA-defined high complexity testing, across a diverse patient population ranging from infants to geriatric patients
• Evaluate, interpret, and ensure accuracy of test results; identify and resolve inconsistencies in patient results in collaboration with MLTs and Lab Support Technicians
• Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, oversee quality control programs, review Levey-Jennings charts, and prepare the laboratory for regulatory inspections
• Write and maintain department procedures using CLSI format; coordinate procedure manual reviews, updates, and distribution
• Provide limited test utilization and interpretation guidance to medical and nursing staff; refer advanced clinical questions to the Laboratory Medical Director
• Train new employees, laboratory students, and existing staff on procedural changes; assist laboratory management with competency evaluations and process improvement activities

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field (progressively responsible experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis)
• Medical Technologist certification (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification (AMT), or equivalent certification from a nationally recognized credentialing agency
• Minimum of one (1) year of progressive clinical laboratory experience or one (1) year of hospital internship following degree completion
• Clinical Competency Assessment required within 3 months of hire and every three years thereafter
• Knowledge of CLIA, Joint Commission, CAP, and other applicable regulatory requirements
• Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and various laboratory software applications

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, or infectious disease safety
• Experience writing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures in a CLSI format
• Prior experience assisting with CAP/CLIA regulatory compliance and laboratory inspections
• Demonstrated ability to train and mentor laboratory staff and students
