Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, disassemble, and manually clean used medical instruments and equipment from clinical areas using appropriate techniques, detergents, and cleaning agents; operate mechanical washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and other automated decontamination equipment.
  • Load and monitor sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and Sterrad machines, verifying effectiveness through process indicators and biological indicators; perform routine maintenance and quality control checks with documentation.
  • Inspect cleaned and sterilized instruments for functionality and completeness; assemble instrument sets and trays per procedural protocols and package them in sterile wraps, pouches, or containers with accurate labeling.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records including counts, expiration dates, and usage patterns; distribute sterile instruments and supplies to surgical suites, procedural areas, and patient care units with appropriate documentation.
  • Collaborate and communicate with operating room staff, nurses, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely availability of sterile instruments and equipment.
  • Adhere to regulatory standards and infection control guidelines; participate in quality assurance activities including audits, documentation, and performance improvement initiatives; report deviations or incidents to supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Current certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) required.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with a commitment to active listening and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, infection control, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Preferred Experience / Skills

  • Prior experience in sterile processing or a healthcare-related field.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating professionalism and cooperative teamwork.
