Histology Technician (Histotech) – IHC Experience Required

Contract | Night Shift | Tuesday–Saturday, 2:00 AM–11:00 AM | 5x8-Hour Shifts | 40 Hours Per Week | Onsite
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare sections of body tissue for examination by a pathologist to diagnose body dysfunction and malignancy, including fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, decalcification, and mounting
- Process, cut, and embed an average of 500 tissue blocks per night shift in collaboration with a team of histotechs
- Perform grossing and fixation procedures including core biopsies, curettings, excision specimens, incisional and shave biopsies, decalcification, and smears and squash preparations
- Operate automatic tissue processors and perform microtomy using automated and manual microtomes and cryostats across a variety of tissue types including fatty, calcified, and GI specimens
- Prepare and apply stains including Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E), basic dye stains, and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining
- Prepare frozen sections and mount tissue sections on glass slides for diagnostic and teaching purposes
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of histology experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting
- Demonstrated experience with Immunohistochemistry (IHC) — required
- ASCP-HT certification required
- Proficiency in tissue processing including automatic tissue processors, microwave processing, GI processing schedules, and handling of calcified/decalcified tissue
- Proficiency in embedding and microtomy including paraffin wax sections, embedding of GI, skin, large, and small specimens, and removal of foreign objects per protocol
- Active NC or Compact state laboratory license (pending acceptable for submission)
Preferred Experience / Skills
- ASCP-HTL certification and experience in commercial or reference laboratory settings
- Advanced staining skills including Special Stains, PAS, Giemsa, IHC staining, carbohydrate and amyloid stains, and connective and muscle stains
- Experience with microscopy techniques including brightfield, dark field, phase contrast, and electron microscopy
- Familiarity with Leica Peloris Tissue Processor, Tissue-Tek VIP Tissue Processor, Tissue-Tek Prisma H&E Stainer, and EPIC electronic health records system
