Special Education Teacher

Primary Purpose: A Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized instruction to students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The teacher will work closely with students, parents, and staff to create and implement tailored educational plans that help students achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals. The role requires expertise in creating a supportive and inclusive environment that meets the needs of students with diverse learning challenges.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field or beyond
  • Valid NC teaching certification in Special Education K-5 required.
  • Experience working with students with a range of disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism, developmental delays, etc.

Skills & Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, techniques, and best practices. Excellent communication and interpersonal
  • skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated experience as a special education teacher
  • Proficiency with behavior management and intervention strategies
  • Strong interpersonal communication, both oral and written; ability to work independently in fast-paced settings
  • Familiarity or willingness to apply the Choice Theory model and Glasser Quality School methodologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide research based specialized instruction aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) 
  • Develop, implement, and assess IEPs, including present levels, goals, required services, and progress adjustments 
  • Assess student progress to determine adjustments or reinforcement needs
  • Collaborate closely with the child study team, EC Director, and wider school staff to coordinate delivery of special education services 
  • Conduct special education evaluations and reevaluations, and serve as a liaison for parents 
  • Supervise and evaluate educational assistants when applicable. 
  • Ensure compliance with school board policies, state and federal special education laws, and complete all required reporting 
  • Carry out other duties as assigned, contributing to school operations and culture

Work Environment:

  • Classroom and school environment, which may include both individual and group instruction.
  • May involve working with students in various settings (classroom, therapy rooms, or outdoor spaces).
  • Frequent interaction with parents, staff, and administrators.
