Key Responsibilities:
- Assess and respond to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients through personal observation and interaction, acting as a patient advocate.
- Set up operating room with appropriate sterile supplies and equipment according to schedule.
- Collaborate with surgical team members, including scrub nurses, anesthesia personnel, and surgeons, to ensure a safe and efficient environment.
- Verify patient identity and operative site, transport patients safely, and communicate accurately with the surgical team.
- Monitor the sterile field continuously during surgical procedures.
- Document patient information accurately, review consent forms, perform "time out" procedures, and oversee sponge and instrument counts.
- Ensure proper labeling and availability of medications, overseeing their use on the sterile field.
- Handle specimens with care, correctly labeling and recording information, and ensuring proper containment.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as goggles and gloves when handling waste and soiled items, ensuring team safety.
- When acting as a float nurse or resource nurse, communicate with all departments, assist with case cart checks, maintain patient flow, and manage staffing efficiently.
- Review surgeon’s preference cards regularly to ensure availability of supplies and equipment.
- Independently familiarize with all equipment, supplies, and drugs, including their storage locations.
- Be knowledgeable about anesthesia supplies, emergency carts, and essential airway equipment.
- Use resources efficiently to contain costs without compromising patient care and participate in inventory counts.
- Assist with housekeeping duties, including bedmaking, floor cleaning between cases, and waste disposal.
- Perform additional duties such as Phase 2 nurse or late nurse as needed, and work in other patient care areas as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Experience in surgical or operating room nursing.
- Knowledge of sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and anesthesia equipment.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a high-pressure environment.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Experience / Skills:
- Previous experience as a circulating or scrub nurse.
- Knowledge of surgeon’s preference cards and inventory management.
- Familiarity with OR safety protocols and emergency procedures.
