Special Education Teacher

Key Responsibilities • Work with district level curriculum team to ensure teachers have access to and are trained in all curriculum areas relevant to their teaching load. • Attend District Level Curriculum meetings and redeliver relevant information to school-based teams. • Coordinate annual IEP and triennial reviews of eligibilities to ensure compliance with IDEA 2004. • Collaborate with school based instructional specialists to provide training and resources to ensure that students are receiving specially designed instruction. • Observe and provide feedback to resource teachers and those serving in a coteaching setting to help improve overall instructional practices. • Works with individual students and teachers to implement instructional strategies based on individual’s needs. • Routine physical activities that are required to fulfil job responsibilities. • Attends, participates, and redelivers information as appropriate from special education department leadership meetings. • Monitors FTE counts and assists with FTE documentation required by the special education department. • Act as student liaison when there are academic concerns for interrelated students (identified by family members, teachers, or the students themselves). • Ensure that students' accommodations and modifications are being shared with, and understood by, all staff who work with the students. • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance. • Acts as a resource for other staff members. • Ensures testing accommodations are communicated to test coordinator and assists with alternate assessment process. • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisor.
Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in special education and at least 3 years of successful teaching in the area of special education with a strong background in instructional practices.
Essential Knowledge/Skills • Extensive knowledge of federal, state and local regulations governing special education, judicial decisions relative to special education and students with disabilities. • Extensive knowledge of various interventions in working with students with disabilities in the school setting. • Must have an understanding of statewide assessments and the ability to discuss student’s progress as it relates to assessments. • Must be able to analyze progress monitoring data to assist teachers with interventions and monitoring a student’s progress in the general education as well as special education settings. • Must possess personal characteristics and professional conduct to successfully interact with teachers, administrators and the public. • Should be detailed oriented in order to ensure compliance with state rules and regulations regarding IEP/Eligibility dates, appropriateness and implementation. • Should have an understanding of Assistive Technology, Functional Behavioral Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans and Transition plans.
Preferred Experience / Skills • Experience working with students with diverse needs and abilities. • Familiarity with IEP development and implementation. • Experience with behavior intervention plans and functional behavioral assessments. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
