Key Responsibilities

  • Support classroom teachers and related professionals in a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program to help students achieve educational and communication goals.
  • Assist with classroom instruction, supervision, and management, including activities in lunchrooms, hallways, and during outings.
  • Provide individual or small-group support to students with hearing impairments, including assistance with mobility and communication.
  • Help facilitate communication through signing support and assist with therapy activities under supervision.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as copying, laminating, and tracking lunch counts, as needed.
  • Support students in transportation, field trips, and other activities to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or higher credentials.
  • Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Paraprofessional Endorsement.
  • Proficiency in sign language (preferably American Sign Language) and understanding of Deaf culture is highly valued.
  • Ability to assist students with special needs and perform support duties such as supervision and mobility assistance.

Preferred Experience / Skills

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other sign languages.
  • Knowledge of educational strategies for students with hearing impairments.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and communication devices used in DHH settings.
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and colleagues.
