4 Tips to keep your New Year’s Resolutions

We have finally come to the end of 2020 and have high hopes for 2021.

The New Year is a great time to “turn over a new leaf.”  It is a reminder to set goals and establish new routines that will help you grow in all aspects of your life.

While most of us resolve to improve ourselves in the coming year very few will actually come close to achieving our goals.

How do you prevent yourself from being one of those that misses the target?

We have a few suggestions on how to keep that resolution strong and meet your goals for 2021!

  1. Make your goal measurable: Being vague may help get you in the right direction, however taking the time to make an action plan can be a huge help to achieving your goals. Whatever your resolution may be, create a plan to track your progress.   Work out four days a week,  cook at home five days a week, save twenty dollars a week, see your family/friends twice a month, etc.  You want a clear target to aim for to keep you on track.
  2. Know that there will be obstacles:  Temptation is everywhere and life is full of challenges that can derail your resolution.  Regardless if your goal is related to food, fitness, finances or work you should consider that you WILL go through something that will make it difficult for you to stay on track.  Consider this in advance when you are planning your goals and how you will navigate through it. Planning ahead for a challenge will help you feel equipped to handle the unexpected that pops up along the way.
  1. Keep track of your progress: A short term goal is much easier to achieve, especially to begin with.  Each small accomplishment will keep you motivated. Taking on too much too quickly is a common reason resolutions fail. Small, incremental changes make it easier to accomplish your goals and increases the likelihood of long-term success.  Progress over perfection!
  2. Stick with it: We all run out of steam sometimes and need a reset.  If you find yourself there, don’t despair, recommit yourself.  Bad habits can build over years, so don’t fret when it takes you weeks, months or years to alter those tendencies.  Working towards your resolution is a process and setbacks are bound to happen.  Once you make the commitment to change and improve a part of your life it will require consistent work to maintain.

Be open and explain your goals to friends and family so they can keep you accountable along the way.  There won’t be a straight line to your goal, but don’t let that stop you from putting in the work.

Whatever your New Year’s resolution is this year we wish you success and hope you achieve all your goals in 2021!
