Count Your Steps: Why Sitting Too Much Is Bad For Your Health

When we think of harmful things that can threaten our life, sitting in a chair is typically not one of them.

However, it’s true that consistently living a sedentary lifestyle will increase your health risks.

It has been linked to increasing obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and anxiety.

The dramatic shift to working remotely has impacted employees in a variety of ways.

For some it has made them increase physical activity.

However, many more have become much more sedentary and gained weight

The shift of commuting and walking to the office has transitioned for many into simply rolling out of bed.

Even those who have a consistent workout routine are in danger.

While exercise is good for you it doesn’t take away from the damage of extended periods of sitting.

Standing desks became very popular several years ago and those who transitioned to sit to stand desks found reduced back and neck pain.

Even if you don’t have the ability to work from a sit to stand desk, find ways to build more activity into your day.

  • Take that break by walking outside.
  • When you go to a store park further away.
  • Use stairs over an elevator, have 5 minute stretch breaks throughout the day.
  •  Turn on some music and dance away.

While there are many benefits to having remote employees and being a remote worker, companies also have to adopt new communication plans to support and promote physical movement for their remote employees.

In the past company wellness plans were much more prevalent, but over the years seemed to have slipped to the bottom of the list of importance for many.

There is no better time than now to revamp those wellness programs, encourage physical movement and truly care about your employees overall wellbeing.
