If you haven’t already, chances are you will likely have a digital interview in your future.
From pandemic precautions to interviewing for a position that would require you to relocate, at some point in your career you will need to know how to best prepare for your digital interview.
First off, YES, your appearance still matters.
Choose professional attire that is neat and clean. Avoid anything with bright designs or patterns.
While the interview will likely only show from your waist up be sure to fully dress the part. It will put you in the right mindset and avoid any silly mishaps.
Don’t forget your background!
Even if only barely visible you want to create a good impression. While you don’t necessarily want a completely blank wall, you do want to avoid clutter.
Stay away from overflowing shelves or a wall of photos and instead have something simple. Background means noise too! Be sure you are in an area where there won’t be any loud noises or distractions.
We all love our children and pets, but don’t allow them to intrude on your interview. Make arrangements ahead of time so there will be no distractions. You don’t want anything to distract from your professional accomplishments. No distractions also means no phone. Have your phone on silent or put away completely to avoid unbecoming and intrusive notifications.
Do check your screen set up prior to the interview. Make sure that the lighting is appropriate and no random objects will cast a not so flattering shadow.
Pro tip, a plain white piece of paper on the surface in front of you will reflect light to help you look your best!
Also keep in mind that gravity is not your friend. You do not want to be looking down at the camera. Depending on the surface your computer or laptop is on you may need to adjust using books or a sturdy box.
All of this will help you avoid showing up late to the interview or having technical difficulties.
Do your research and be prepared to answer any questions and have some of your own related to the job you are interviewing for. Know about the company and what their mission, vision and values are. Being knowledgeable in these areas will allow you to show off how well your values relate to their company.
Overall, make sure you are prepared! Do a full trial run with a friend or family member so can adjust your lighting, sound, camera or appearance. Feedback is always a great tool and could mean the difference between a successful interview or a flop. Remember, look at the camera, give a warm smile, and allow your knowledge and experience to speak for you!
